Ethiopian Proverb "When Spider Webs Unite, They Can Tie Up A Lion"
Last year proved to be one of the most challenging in recent times as finances decreased and demand for our services increased. Yet, while the headlines read problems, the Urban League of Greater Dallas continues to find solutions.
Teyina Reed, 28, wanted a better job, a better life and enrolled in the Urban League GED Preparation Class at our Irving location. After just a few months she took the exam. Her final overall GED scores were high but her exceptionally high score on the reading exam placed her in the 99 percentile in the United States. She is currently enrolled in North Lake College majoring in Business Management. “The Urban League helped me become empowered,” she said, “now I can fulfill my dreams.”
Cyrus Wilson was homeless and in and out of shelters when he was referred to our Efficiency Apartment Supportive Housing Program two years ago. He now has a full time job, stable housing and he maintains sobriety. Additionally, he has become an ordained minister and recently purchased a car which allows him the opportunity to work in his church and his community.”Thanks to the Urban League,” he said, I am empowered.”
As we endure a period in our history that is certain to test the fortitude of our organization, we must look to our mission for guidance. With resources in short supply, it is more critical than ever for us to deliver resources and help individuals and their families improve their education, employment and economic status. Even in this economic climate, we are determined to continue providing the services that “empower” our clients to fulfill their potential. We perform this work as a critical part of our mission and to favorably influence positive change in the community we have proudly served for over 43 years.
During the next year and well into the future, we are counting on you, our supporters, corporate partners and friends to help us continue to be innovative and work to develop creative solutions to address the problem of limited resources that hamper our progress. I am absolutely certain that we will never lose sight of our mission as we work to improve the quality of life for our most vulnerable citizens. We invite you to come along on what is to be a remarkable and most promising journey in the history of the City of Dallas.
