community service block grant
Community Centers
In November 2001, the Urban League of Greater Dallas and North Central Texas, Inc., was designated as the Community Action Agency for Dallas County by Rick Perry, Governor of the State of Texas. As the designated Community Action Agency, the Urban League is charged with servicing the poor of Dallas County who are at or below 125% of the poverty income guidelines issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services each year. The program is funded by the Community Service Block Grant from the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs.
Program services are implemented through the Urban League Community Service Centers. The centers are community based facilities providing diverse services to enable low-income families and adults to move from poverty to self-sufficiency; improve their lives through community revitilization; own a stake in community by identifying needs; establish and meet goals; learn, expand, and navigate social service and other service networks through community needs assessment; and acheive family stability.
These centers can be easily accessed at their Garland, Irving, Pleasant Grove, and Oak Cliff neighborhood locations. Service hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Referrals are accepted, but each client must meet income guidelines.
